8. H. PRABOWO SUBIANTO

Prabowo Subianto, born on October 17, 1951, in Jakarta, Indonesia, is the nation's eighth president, inaugurated on October 20, 2024. He hails from a prominent family; his father, Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, was a notable economist and served as a minister under Presidents Sukarno and Suharto.

Education

Prabowo's early education was international due to his family's periods of exile. He attended schools in various countries, including the American School in London. Upon returning to Indonesia, he enrolled in the Indonesian Military Academy in 1970 and graduated in 1974.

Military Career

After his graduation, Prabowo embarked on a military career that spanned nearly three decades. He joined the Indonesian National Army Special Forces (Kopassus) in 1976 and rose through the ranks to become the commander of Kopassus in 1995. In 1998, he was appointed as the commander of the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad). However, his military tenure ended controversially in 1998 amid allegations of human rights abuses during the final years of President Suharto's regime, leading to his discharge from service.

Political Career

Transitioning to politics, Prabowo founded the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) in 2008. He has been a prominent figure in Indonesian politics, running for the presidency in 2014 and 2019 but was unsuccessful in both attempts. Despite previous electoral defeats, he remained influential and was appointed as the Minister of Defense from 2019 to 2024 under President Joko Widodo. In the 2024 presidential election, Prabowo secured a decisive victory, obtaining over 59% of the vote, and chose Gibran Rakabuming Raka, President Widodo's son, as his vice president.

Throughout his career, Prabowo has been a polarizing figure, with a blend of military discipline and political acumen shaping his approach to governance. His presidency is anticipated to continue the developmental policies of his predecessor while addressing the challenges of human rights and democratic consolidation in Indonesia.
